Cyprus High Summer Reading 2017

Why a summer reading program?
By the end of summer, students perform, on average, one month behind where they left off in the spring. Of course, not all students experience “average” losses. Summer learning loss disproportionately affects low-income students. While all students lose some ground in mathematics over the summer, low-income students lose more ground in reading, while their higher-income peers may even gain. Most disturbing is that summer learning loss is cumulative; over time, the difference between the summer learning rates of low-income and higher-income students contributes substantially to the achievement gap.”
–The Wallace Foundation “Making Summer Count: How Summer Programs Can Boost Children’s Learning,” 2011

What is required?
Each student at Cyprus High is required to read one book from the list below during the summer. This novel will be used for an in-class writing assignment during the first two weeks of the term, which will be worth 10% of the quarter’s grade in each English class.

Where can I find a book?
Books are available to check out at the Magna Library, as well as the Cyprus Library. During the summer, books can be checked out from the Main Office. They can also be purchased at book stores or online.

Tip: Split the cost of a book with some friends and share it throughout the summer.
