Overview

Bel Canto by Ann Patchett

Ann Pratchett’s award winning, New York Times bestselling Bel Canto balances themes of love and crisis as disparate characters learn that music is their only common language. As in Patchett’s other novels, including Truth & Beauty and The Magician’s Assistant, the author’s lyrical prose and lucid imagination make Bel Canto a captivating story of strength and frailty, love and imprisonment, and an inspiring tale of transcendent romance.

Setting
An unnamed South American country is hosting a birthday party for an influential Japanese businessman at the Vice President’s house. He doesn’t really want to attend, but his favorite opera singer will be performing - so how can he refuse?
Characters
Mr. Hosokawa is an opera lover and successful businessman. Roxanne Coss is a famed soprano who performs at Mr. Hosokawa’s birthday party. Gen Watanabe works for Mr. Hosokawa as a translator. A radical terrorist group ambushes the birthday party and holds all of the guests hostage for months. Gen becomes indispensable as he is the one person who can communicate with everyone in attendance. Over time, the terror of the initial hostage situation turns into a much more relaxed situation, as the terrorists and hostages get to know each other, learn from each other, love each other, and appreciate opera together.
