Overview

Soldier Boy by Keely Hutton

A searing, shocking book—part non-fiction, part novel—based on the true story of a child soldier in Uganda who survived war and enslavement and went on to create a haven for others who suffered a similar fate

Soldier Boy begins with the story of Ricky Richard Anywar, abducted at age fourteen in 1989 to fight with Joseph Kony's rebel army in Uganda’s decades-long civil war. Ricky is trained, armed, and forced to fight government soldiers alongside his brutal kidnappers, but never stops dreaming of escape.

The story continues twenty years later, with a fictionalized character named Samuel, representative of the thousands of child soldiers Ricky eventually helped rehabilitate as founder of the internationally acclaimed charity Friends of Orphans.

Working closely with Ricky himself, debut author Keely Hutton has written an eye-opening book about a boy’s unbreakable spirit and indomitable courage. Beginning in Africa amidst the horrors of civil war, his is a story that is as uplifting as it is heartwrenching.

Setting
The Book takes place in East Africa in the country of uganda. The village ricky lives in more towards keyna surrounded by trees and life.
Characters
The book Soldier boy written by Keely Hutton is a story about a child named Ricky being abducted into Joseph Kony's army in the uganda civil war. Being trained to use weapons and survive in war, Ricky must fight side by side by the people who kidnapped him, along with his brother Samuel, a man who has already been through enough fights along with Ricky in this unholy war, hoping one day they will be free.
Good Points
In the book there where very little good points, almost to none, but the author told the story very well. Having the book be told in the third person gives a better understanding to the environment and the characters actions. Having the book be told in a blunt way helps to get to know exactly what is happening.
Bad Points
The bad points in the book was the inconsistency of switching between characters, and that it changed about every chapter.
Plot Summary
Ricky is a young boy who lives in uganda with his parents in his village along with his brother Samuel. Ricky and Samuel have quite the age difference, while ricky is a young boy still, Samuel is a little older, and has already has survived a lot. Ricky was only 14 when he got abducted into Kony's army, ripping away any chance to live like a normal kid.
Ending
The story ends by jumping 20 years and being told by samuel, who can hardly trust a soul.
