Overview

The Exorcism of Sofia Flores (The Merciless Series #2) by Danielle Vega

Danielle Vega—YA’s answer to Stephen King—once again brings major scares in the spine-tingling sequel to horror hit The Merciless, which MTV calls “Mean Girls meets The Exorcist.”

Sofia is still processing the horrific truth of what happened when she and three friends performed an exorcism that spiraled horribly out of control. Ever since that night, Sofia has been haunted by bloody and demonic visions. Her therapist says they’re all in her head, but to Sofia they feel chillingly real. She just wants to get out of town, start fresh someplace else . . . until her mother dies suddenly, and Sofia gets her wish.

Sofia is sent to St. Mary’s, a creepy Catholic boarding school in Mississippi. There, seemingly everyone is doing penance for something, most of all the mysterious Jude, for whom Sofia can’t help feeling an unshakeable attraction. But when Sofia and Jude confide in each other about their pasts, something flips in him. He becomes convinced that Sofia is possessed by the devil. . . . Is an exorcism the only way to save her eternal soul?

Discuss the setting and the role it played. Describe when and where the story takes place.
Who are the main characters? What problems or conflicts does each character face in the book? Briefly describe each character.
What are the good points of this book? What did the author do well? Tell why you liked the book.
What, if any, were the bad points in the book? What did you feel the author did poorly? Tell why you didn't like the book.
This is where you give a brief summary of the book. Tell about at least two events that took place in the story. Don't give away the ending but give a 20 second synopsis that describes the story.
Without giving away the ending tell whether or not the ending was satisfying. Did the end fit the story?

The Merciless II

User Review

Setting
Sofia is scarred from last year when her friends are murdered. She is trying to get on with her life, when tragedy strikes again. Her mother dies and she has nowhere to go.
Characters
After Sofia is orphaned, she is sent to a Catholic school. She is trying to be good, she can't be evil. Can she? Even though every time her grandmother sees her all she can say is "Diablo". Is she the devil?
At the school, she makes friends, but when jealousy hits, bad things start to happen around her.
Good Points
Good or evil? It's hard to know which one Sophia is. She wants to be good, but evil happens to others when she is around. Guilty for doing bad things, her therapist says it isn't real. But is it? Does she have a demon attached to her?
Jude is her crush, but things get really strange when he tries to torture the demon out of her.
Plot Summary
Sofia's roommate dies. Her pet dies. Her mother dies. In the end, there is no one left but her. She is not sure if God has abandoned her or not.
When Sofia witnesses something terrible, she is even more confused. Needing someone to love her, she turns to Jude. That's when things get weird...
Ending
I didn't love the ending. It was somewhat predictable. At the same time, it was a little over the top. When Sofia is beaten, tortured and has a broken arm, she still is able to fight off her enemy, run through the snow and cross a frozen river while barefooted. (seriously?)
There is another in the series, and I am excited to read it.
