Synopsis

Marshall Seaver is being haunted.
It begins with mysterious sounds, a fleeting face outside a window, a rogue breeze — all things that can be explained away. That is, until he comes face-to-face with a character who only exists on the pages of a sketchbook — a character Marshall himself created.

Marshall has no idea why he is being tormented by this forbidding creature, but he is quickly convinced it has something to do with his best friend, Cooper, who has gone missing. Together with Cooper’s beautiful but aloof sister, Sydney, Marshall searches for the truth about his friend while ultimately uncovering a nightmare that is bigger and more frightening than he could ever have imagined.

Number one New York Times bestselling author D. J. MacHale launches his eerie trilogy with a story so packed with chilling suspense, listeners will want to sleep with the light on.

Publishers Weekly

MacHale (the Pendragon series) launches the Morpheus Road trilogy with this creepy, tension-filled adventure, in which 16-year-old Marsh Seaver is terrorized by forces he doesn't understand. It's the first week of summer, and Marsh is all alone, his widower father out of town on business, and his best friend Cooper a few hours away at Thistledown Lake with his family. Things get seriously weird when Gravedigger, a skeletal comic book character of Marsh's design, starts stalking him. Convinced that only Cooper can help him, Marsh enlists the aid of Cooper's beautiful yet frosty sister, Sydney, to get to the lake. Once they arrive, they learn that Cooper is missing and true terror is just beginning. Spooky and fraught with peril, this ghost story evokes campfire horrors and classic slasher films with a relentless onslaught of macabre imagery and mortal danger. What is Gravedigger, what does he want, and how does it all tie into Cooper's fate? Unfortunately, as the first act in a larger piece, few answers are revealed, and numerous questions are left unresolved in anticipation of the next installment. Ages 10-up. (Apr.)

Setting
The story takes place in a small town in Connecticut called Stony Brook, and a another town next to a lake, not too far from Stony Brook called Thistledown. This is all happening during present time.
Characters
Marsh Seaver and Cooper Foley are the main characters. Marsh is very creative and close-minded, he enjoys doing things with his friend cooper, however he doesn't like the idea of more social crowds or dangerous things. Cooper, on the other hand lives for the adventures! He's always ready to start a new challenge and isn't afraid to speak his mind.
Good Points
I really enjoyed the detailed parts of whenever GraveDigger appeared to marsh in the book. MacHale did an amazing job at giving each individual character personality that fit perfectly with complete opposites.
Bad Points
I found the flash backs to the past very helpful, however I didn't really enjoy having to read the really long ones.
Plot Summary
Marsh ends up seeing mysterious supernatural events that involve his own drawing character known as gravedigger that tries to kill him and tell him things. And cooper also ends up missing, which causes more stress on marsh when he needed coppers help the most. Haunting and coopers absence are somewhat related.
Ending
The ending makes me you think but overall it's very good and it will have coopers ending tying into the next book.

Setting
Set in the present time.
Characters
Marsh is being haunted by Gravedigger, a creation of his own imagination. To complicate matters, Marsh's best friend, Cooper, has gone missing. Marsh sets out to find Cooper and slowly realizes that the haunting and Cooper's disappearance may be related.
Good Points
It grabbed me from the very beginning and kept up the suspense until the very end. It was a great read for October!
Bad Points
I think the author drug out the ending just a little too long.
Plot Summary
Just when Marsh is looking forward to the start of summer, his best friend Cooper winds up in trouble and has to go to the family cabin. Marsh's dad leaves for work in Las Vegas and strange things start happening. Marsh thinks Cooper is the only one that can help him, but Cooper has gone missing. As Marsh begins to look for Cooper it becomes more and more likely that the haunting and Cooper's disappearance are related.
Ending
Very satisfying!

Setting
Marshall Seaver believes in ghosts. He has seen things that others have not. Gravedigger is a character he has drawn in his art class. Somehow, it appears and tried to kill him.
Characters
Marshall and Cooper have been best friends since they were little. Marshall is the 'geek' and Cooper is the 'adventurer'. When Cooper gets in trouble with the police, he is taken by his parents to their vacation cabin. Soon he is missing and Marshall thinks he knows what happened.
There are supernatural forces involved.
Good Points
I loved this book. There was a lot of surprises. The characters were all very real. Morpheus Road keeps coming up, but no one knows what or where it is.
Bumps in the night, blood, and Gravedigger. It's all very mysterious.
Plot Summary
When Cooper disappears, Marsh keeps seeing Gravedigger with a hideous grin on his face. Every time he sees him he is nearly killed. He feels a strong presence trying to guide him to safety and help him find answers.
Marsh finds himself drawn to Coop's sister. Even though she has never been nice to him, they end up working together to find out what happened.
Ending
Cooper is finally found. He's not ok. There are still many mysteries and I can't wait to read the second book.

The Light

User Review

Setting
The author creates a strong setting for the story that is being told. The main setting is the Foley cabin at a lake. The setting allows the author to use the lake, cabin, and the town nearby in his novel to create the events that happen to the characters. The story takes place during in June during summer vacation for these high schoolers.
Characters
The Light is a story about Marshall Seaver and his best friend, Cooper Foley. Marshall and Cooper have been best friends for a long time, but disaster strikes when Cooper disappears at the beginning of their summer vacation. Marshall shrugs this off at first as some of Cooper’s normal antics, but when he is gone for longer than normal, Marshall begins to worry. Marshall, home alone due to his dads business trip, gets scared when he discovers that Gravedigger, a fictional character drawn by Marshall for his comic books, is alive and haunting the pair of friends.
Good Points
The events that MacHale chose to include in his book all feel relevant to the plot. Everything that happens to the characters builds up to an ending that is not only satisfying, but also sets it up for a sequel. Another strong point of the novel is character development. The characters presented in the novel are well developed. You learn about the characters’ personalities, their life before the novel, and in some cases you get to see how they feel about what is happening to them.
Ending
The ending is strong and it sets up the story for a sequel.
