Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident

User Review

Setting
The story is set in modern times, in a society in which humans do not know that mythical creatures such as fairies, trolls, and even centaurs, exist. Humans live above the ground while the mythical creatures live underground in their own society. These creatures also have technology that is far superior to humans and many creature possess magic abilities, enabling them to enhance their technology furthermore. The story takes place in multiple locations around the world, the most notable location being Russia.
Characters
The protagonist of the story is Artemis Fowl, a boy genius who currently runs a criminal empire after his father mysteriously disappeared, Artemis is smart, cunning, and will do whatever it takes to get what he wants. By his side is Butler, a descendant of the family of the same name that has been bound to the Fowl family to protect and serve them. Butler is caring, tough and lives to serve Artemis's needs. Holly Short is Captain of the underground LEPrecon division, a recon division of the Lower elements police, a enemy of Artemis, she nows the danger he poses to the fairy world and knows that his knowledge must be stopped. Holly is highly trained in reconnaissance and combat training, and has a array of magical power, along with a suit that comes equipped with gadgets and weapons.
Good Points
One good point of the book is character development, I really like how the book overall explores the nuances to each of these characters lives, though said development is obviously more focused on some characters than others, I think the author does a good job of exploring the main characters's pasts and relationships to each other. I like the book because its set in this place where humans exist and so do fairies and trolls etc. But the humans are not aware of the latter existing, making the story of Artemis Fowl the first of its own, a human making direct contact with mythical creatures for the first time. While in essence it's very generic I do like it because it has this idea that people, or non-people, can get along just fine. Also they're like underground aliens, which is a cool idea.
Bad Points
One bad point I think can be found in the structure of the book, sometimes the book jumps from place to place to update the reader on what is happening at certain places, which isn't necessarily bad but I think that the author does so in a way that confuses the reader as to what is happening in the book. For example while events are occurring in one place, the author will take you in another place to talk about the events there, but by the time you get back to the initial event, you almost forgot what happened.
Plot Summary
In this installment, Artemis Fowl is contacted by the Russian Mafia, saying that they have found his presumed dead father, holding him as hostage and for ransom. Along with this, 2 goblins have teamed up with Opal Koboi and are also conspiring to do harm. This causes Holly and Artemis to team up in order to save his father and the underground world.
Ending
To me, the ending was satisfying, obviously it has some cliffhangers but that's supposed to happen as there's another installment in the series
