Publishers Weekly

Delany's debut launches a paranormal series with a thoughtful but flawed exploration of emotionally wounded teens. Sixteen-year-old Jessica spends her days mourning her mother, mooning over football star Derek, and tiptoeing around her accident-altered best friend, Sarah. She doesn't want complications like Pietr Rusakova in her life, but doesn't have a choice when she is assigned to guide the newcomer around school. Soon Pietr and Jessica are setting off romantic sparks, but she pushes him away--Sarah has her eye on him. When Jessica learns Pietr's biggest secret--that he and his siblings are werewolves--she becomes involved in a complicated web that includes the Russian mafia, the CIA, and ticking time-bomb Sarah. The plot has some problems (particularly that no one gives Sarah details about her accident), but Delany effectively probes what makes a monster, how being too selfless can be damaging to the soul, and whether it's possible to rewrite a person's personality. Readers who can overlook the plot issues will likely be caught up in the story's potential to explode, but will have to wait for the next installment for the boom. Ages 13-up. (July)

Setting
The story takes place in the small town of Junction and a lot of it takes place at Junction High School which happens to be where Jess meets Pietr and is assigned to be his guide around school. Jess isn’t too thrilled about this but still tries to get to know Pietr. She eventually gives up when Pietr is nothing but short with her. The big news at the time is that People have been disappearing in a nearby town and there are rumors that some type of beast is on the loose. Jess tries to find out more about Pieter’s history but when it comes to that topic he shuts her down and when it comes to talking about the beast on the loose he is very short with her.
Characters
As much as I want to say I liked Delany’s characters it felt like there was something missing. If you are going to write a story that has already been written a hundred times you need to add something that will make it stand out, otherwise it is just another girl meets werewolf story. It also bothered me that it took Jessica until almost the end of the book to even pick up a hint that Pietr is a werewolf. She had plenty of signs such as him healing very fast, the fact that he thought vampires received more attention than werewolves, and also the fact that there were so many wolf attacks in the town Pietrs family just left. Overall she just seemed like a super indecisive character. I did not know how I felt about Pietrs character a lot of the time. He had a snarky attitude in the beginning of the book but as I went on it was easier to see the two sides of him. He tries to tell Jess that he is a werewolf but she doesn’t believe him until he physically shows her, but by this point the book is almost over. Pietr and Jess argue and disagree about many things but you can still tell that there is a mutual attraction between the two of them.
Bad Points
The setup of this book is pretty easy to follow. It is narrated by the main character Jessica Gillmansen which obviously gives the audience more insight on her perspective of the events of the story. The author made the story easy to follow which was nice but not necessarily hard to do. She had some good points to make but took too long to make them a majority of the time which made the story go slow for me. It also made it harder to remain interested the whole way through the story. A few of the events such as the Russian Mafia and The murder of Jessica’s mother did not tie into the story as well as they should have, they did not relate to the main idea the writer was trying to get across. Her themes seemed to be redefying the meaning of normal and trying to analyze what makes a man vs. what makes a monster and that was not always obvious.
Plot Summary
Thirteen to Life, by Shannon Delany is somewhat of a dark romance that is skewed towards younger teens. Jessica otherwise known as jess throughout the story is our main character who seems to know exactly what she wants until an exchange student changes all of that for her. Though Jessica finds pietr annoying we see the two go through many intense situations together leading them to a bond that neither one expected. It is your classical girl meets werewolf story and you would think Jessica would have picked up on it when pietr jumped through a window and survived that fall, but it does take some time to get to the depth of the story.
Ending
Delany had a good ending but unfortunately the road there wasn’t what I expected. The story takes so long to finally get to the point and then when it does get there it sort of abruptly ends. Jess finally believes that Pietr is a werewolf but by the time we really get there the story is over. I feel like more of the buildup throughout the story should have been related to this final moment. As I said before I think Delany had two main themes but she could have used them earlier on throughout the story. I did not get much out of this book. It did not take long to read but it was hard to remain interested at times. If you like werewolf/ vampire mysteries then this might be a book you would be interested in.

Setting
Jessica, Pietr, and Sarah live in Junction and go to Junction High. This is a story taken in the present time. It is Jessica’s junior year in school. Since Jessica is pushing Sarah towards Pietr, she gets hurt. Jessica is hiding a life that she has with Pietr from Sarah. Pietr is miserable in the situation but doesn’t want to hurt Sarah because Jessica doesn’t want her to be hurt. Jessica is protecting Sarah too much that it hurts her.
Characters
Jessica is a teen just trying to get through life. She is trying to deal with her mother’s death and she isn’t doing a good job at it. She is in the school newspaper staff and is obsessed with finding stories on Vampires. Pietr moves in and Jessica has to show him around the school. Their relationship grows from there. It’s a confusing romance. Jessica push’s Pietr towards Sarah and hates her for it. Jessica’s obsessed with a football player and doesn’t see how much she really wants to be with Pietr. They both need each other. Jessica helps Pietr fit in and Pietr helps Jessica really open up about her past. They have a dysfunctional relationship. They both want to be with each other but around Sarah they don’t act like it at all.
Good Points
The good points of this book are the way the characters work off each other to build themselves up. Delany puts good situations into the book that build them closer together inside but in a way also push’s them apart. I liked how after reading this book I can’t decide who I like better. It’s not unique but the background is well plotted into the story and Jessica and Pietr. I don’t like that it is similar to other books but it did keep me reading into the night
Plot Summary
13 to Life by Shannon Delany is a book that is about a girl named Jessica, a normal teenager from Junction trying to get over her mother’s accident that killed her. She falls for the new guy, Pietr. They are in high school and Jessica notices that Pietr is different and she wants to know why. She spends a lot of time with him and eventually finds out that Pietr likes her too. But, Jessica is soon told of the crush her friend has on him. Jessica would do anything for Sarah so she pushes them together even though it hurts her. Sarah is dealing with change because she doesn’t remember any of her past from the accident she caused that killed Jessica’s mother.
Ending
The end is a cliff hanger and I don’t like that about books. I wish that Delany could just make the book a little longer or do one more book not three and counting. When I finished it I went on and read the next book but it’s not hooking me like the first book. I got out that there is always someone in your life that can help you get through your problems.

Setting
The novel takes place in Junction, a sleepy small town with Jessica narrating. Jessica is in high school as is the majority of the Ruskova family so much of the story takes place at Junction High. Junction High is also the place of many conflicts between many of the high school aged characters. Another main setting of 13 to Life is Jess’s house and horse ranch. It’s where Jess has her first siting of the oborot and where Jess and Pietr accept their attraction to each other. Also important is the Ruskova house where Jessica and Pietr’s relationship deepens as do her relationships with the rest of the Ruskova family.
Characters
Jessica and Pietr are the most definite main characters of the book where the most conflict and the biggest relationship take place. But there are also very important minor characters including Sarah and Derek, other love interests. With Jessica and Pietr’s whirlwind romance and the mystery of the oborot taking precedence in the novel, the story keeps a reader glued. With Derek, Jessica’s former crush, stirring up trouble and causing conflict between him and Pietr, it creates a better dynamic for Pietr and Jessica’s relationship as does Sarah. Sarah also likes Pietr and Jessica pushes Pietr towards her causing an unwilling relationship between Sarah and Pietr and a strained secret relationship between Pietr and Jessica. These relationships amplify and deepen the romance aspect of 13 to Life and also showing effective characters
Good Points
13 to Life is a book that will keep readers turning pages late into the night. Shannon Delany, the author of 13 to Life definitely creates unique and definite characters that complement each other and show contrast. And although a book containing werewolves isn’t unique, the way Delany presents them in the story and her specific background is compelling as is the romance aspect of Jess and Pietr.
Plot Summary
Jessica Gillmansen, a normal high school girl at Junction High, had her world twisted when the Ruskova family moved to town. At the beginning of the story, Jess is introduced to Pietr Ruskova, a fellow junior and the new student she is required to guide. This sets of the relationship of Pietr and Jessica, seemingly hostile at first but quickly develops into a heartbreaking romance involving not only Jessica, but also her best friend, Sarah. Jessica becomes very close to Pietr and finds out that he is an oborot, or a werewolf, thanks to experiments in the USSR during the Cold War. Through Jess’s relationship with Pietr and the Ruskova’s Jess’s life is thrown into a supernatural spiral involving the Russian Mafia, the CIA and everyone around her.
Ending
The ending was not satisfying. Actually it left me hanging and I immediately went and searched for the next book that left Jess and Pietr still in a secret relationship and searching for the cure. The end definitely fit the story though and it was action packed, making it even better
