Overview

In the tradition of The Fault in Our Stars, critically acclaimed author Melissa Kantor masterfully captures the joy of friendship, the agony of loss, and the unique experience of being a teenager in this poignant new novel about a girl grappling with her best friend's life-threatening illness.

A person's whole life, she's lucky to have one or two real friends. Friends who are like family… For Zoe, that someone is Olivia. So when Olivia is diagnosed with leukemia, Zoe is determined to put on a brave face and be positive for her best friend.

Even when she isn't sure what to say. Even when Olivia misses months of school. Even when Zoe starts falling for Calvin, Olivia's crush.

The one thing that keeps Zoe moving forward is knowing that Olivia will beat this, and everything will go back to the way it was before. It has to. Because the alternative is too terrifying for her to even imagine.

Discuss the setting and the role it played. Describe when and where the story takes place.
Who are the main characters? What problems or conflicts does each character face in the book? Briefly describe each character.
What are the good points of this book? What did the author do well? Tell why you liked the book.
What, if any, were the bad points in the book? What did you feel the author did poorly? Tell why you didn't like the book.
This is where you give a brief summary of the book. Tell about at least two events that took place in the story. Don't give away the ending but give a 20 second synopsis that describes the story.
Without giving away the ending tell whether or not the ending was satisfying. Did the end fit the story?

Setting
Most of the time they are at school in the beginning of the book. Then later on they’re at the hospital a lot. Zoe becomes part of the soccer team.
Characters
Olivia and Zoe are best friends and they do almost everything together. They tell each other everything and have always been great friends. Then something horrible and unexpected happened to Olivia, she got cancer. Zoe was heart broken and so confused on why that was happening to her friend and why it wasn’t someone else. She just didn’t understand.
Good Points
I really liked how the author was able to write in the mind of a teenager. She was able to write how the teenagers would talk and how they would think and feel in those situations
Bad Points
The book didn’t have really any bad points. There were some sentences that didn’t make much sense to me but other than that I thought it was good.
Plot Summary
In the book, Maybe One Day, by Melissa Kantor it was different than I was expecting. It started out where Zoe and Olivia were kicked off their dance team. Zoe is kind of friends with a girl named Emma but she’s completely different because Emma is a cheerleader. Zoe is a dancer and she plays soccer
Ending
The ending was good I think that it answered all the questions I had. What I got out of the book was, always cherish what you have because you never know what life has ahead for you. Be kind to everyone around you and love unconditionally.

Setting
Zoe and Olivia lived in New Jersey and went to Wamasset High School. Their ballet studio was also in New Jersey. They both did so much in New Jersey, this is where they spent most of their life. Being on the elite team for NYBC, they would be able to travel the world, go to Manhattan and live there. Because of Olivia getting cancer and not knowing what was going to happen, both Zoe and Olivia spent most of their time in hospital. Good news was that Olivia was getting better and great things were happening, but Zoe always wanted to be with her best friend during this struggle and difficult time. They were both at the hospital a lot with all different kind of chemo for Olivia.
Characters
Zoe is a strong character in this book. Melissa Kantor really makes Zoe just a good character who goes through a lot. Teenagers go through lots of struggles of being sick, anxiety, depression, etc. The author makes Zoe perfect for today's society, Zoe is going through what many people nowadays are dealing with and it makes it so easy to relate with. Having your best friend being super sick is not easy, the author made it so real. I felt like the author knew what teenagers go through today and it was just a lot more easy to put myself in Zoes shoes. Olivia had a crush on Calvin which Zoe was not too happy about because she cannot stand him. After Olivia gets sick, Zoe starts to realize that she is falling for Calvin, she never thought would ever happen. Calvin is a very small character, isn’t mentioned much but his character was a big part in both Zoe and Olivia’s life.
Good Points
This book talked about best friends and their friendship, it was so touching to read. The author, Melissa Kantor did so awesome on talking about Zoe and Olivia’s friendship together and the beauty of it. This story is amazing, it made me feel good, sad, and peaceful while I was reading it. The author did good overall on this story about bringing up two girls lives and the struggles they went through, it was modern and relatable.
Bad Points
Something that I wish would’ve been talked about more was how Olivia felt was she was sick. The author really didn’t go into much detail about what Olivia felt or was thinking when she was super sick and in the hospital. It would’ve been much more real if Olivia’s thoughts and feelings were mentioned in the story so we could imagine what it was like and be in the story instead of with the story.

Plot Summary
In Maybe One Day by Melissa Kantor, these two teenaged best friends, Zoe and Olivia, were ballerinas with the elite NYBC which was the best ballet school in the country. They loved dancing together and wanted to for as long as they could. Being ballerinas, they were able to go tour the world and live together, they were both so excited! Then one day at school their teacher, Ms. Daniels, said to them that there is no more room for these two girls. Zoe and Olivia were devastated about this news they just heard. Zoe wanted to just cry and cry about it. They both looked at each other and gave a look to another about how hurt and sad they were. It was hard for them to accept the fact that everything is not going to be the same not being able to dance at NYBC. Later on, Olivia got super sick and found out that she had cancer. This was not only hard for Olivia but Zoe as well. They both didn’t know what was going to happen down in their lives.

Ending
Zoe was helpful, loving, and caring towards Olivia and was so optimistic about this whole situation at the end, they showed their friendship with each other and it was a very powerful ending, it fit with the story so well. Even though both Zoe and Olivia wanted to dance together for the rest of their lives and tour the world, not being able to get into NYBC, and Olivia getting cancer, that did not stop these girls from enjoying their lives and being with each other. Zoe knew that everything would everything would okay. She didn’t know what would happen, how it would happen or the results of anything but she knew it was going to be okay and that it has to be. I think we need to be optimistic in every situation, have a positive attitude because if so, we can get far in life but if we don’t, we can’t go anywhere and our lives wouldn’t be important.
