Overview

The last words Ash hears her mother say are, “When you fall in love, you will carve out your heart and throw it into the deepest ocean. You will be all in—blood and salt.”

Determined to find her mother when she disappears, Ash follows her to Quivara, Kansas, the spiritual commune she escaped long ago. But something sinister and ancient waits among the rustling cornstalks of this village lost to time.

Her mother is nowhere to be found, but Ash is plagued by memories of her ancestor, Katia, which harken back to the town’s history of unrequited love, murder, alchemy, and immortality. Charming traditions give way to a string of deaths. And Ash feels herself drawn to Dane, a mysterious, forbidden boy with secrets of his own.

As the community prepares for a ceremony five hundred years in the making, Ash fights to save her mother, her lover, and herself. She must discover the truth about Quivara before it’s too late. Before she’s all in—blood and salt.

Blood and Salt

User Review

Setting
Most of this takes place in Quivira, Kansas. The very beginning of the story started 500 years ago. It goes back and forth from then to the current year.
Characters
Ashlyn and Rhys are twins. Their mother has tried to protect Ashlyn from the unknown powers that try to contact her. She has burned symbols into her skin to try to ward off the evil that is in the family. When mom disappears, Ash is determined to travel to Quivira, Kansas to find her.
Good Points
The book starts out with Ash seeing a dead girl hanging above her head. She sees her frequently and has seen her since she was young. No one else does.
The family relationship was strong. Ash was protective of her brother, and her mom.
There were a lot of twists in the book, many of which made you wonder who was good and who was evil.
Plot Summary
When Ash and Rhys make it to Quivira, there is nothing but a cornfield. But the fields have power. They are led inside where others have not been so lucky.
The summer solstice is close, and they have a ceremony that has been in the waiting for many years. Ash is bound to another, while her heart belongs to someone else.
There are many interesting characters and twists that keep you interested.
Ending
I was a little disappointed in the end. There were several unanswered questions. It was not clear what happened to some of the characters.
