Setting
The setting takes place in the early 20th century where Maddie lives on the countryside of New York. With Maddie;s mother being a drunk with no job or annual income, she has to do a lot to keep things running. It’s just the two of them in the house, but on some days they do “readings” to bring in some extra cash for alcohol. Things haven't always been so great for Maddie but she always tries to find a way to cope with a lot of things.
Characters
Two main characters on this book would have to be Maddie and Subbs. Maddie is your average girl who tries to act normal but really isn’t. She has a very mature attitude towards things in life. At home she takes care of her mother showing responsibility at its finest, while outside of the house she’s very smart and clever. Although she cant handle a lot of pressure, stress, and life conflicts, that’s what her best friend is for. Subbs is your average pudgy boy that always finds the joy in the little things and worst scenarios. He gives Maddie some words of encouragement to help her get through with what she’s dealing with. Also always having her back in any type of situation and support her with what she does. The relationship between these two is one of a kind making their relationship throughout the story the support system of how they handle things weather together or alone.
Good Points
Victoria Laurie gives a lot of meaning and depth into this story. She starts of by the very beginning from literal birth of the main character to all the tragic things that happened to her life. This gives some sympathy to the reading drawing them into the story more feeling a sense of guilt. Another way she makes this book so great is the storyline behind everything. With such intricate and detailed events within the story, those little details branch off into other conflicts making the story's main conflict just build up even more and becomes dynamic at the climax of the story. Victoria also gives a sense of a “real life” situation. Somewhere along in the book, she places the protagonist in a situation that we have all had a thought of at least once. A strange truck slowly following you at night, possibly trying to kidnap you. This event gets the reader going, gets them wondering of what will happen if she doesn’t make it, or what will happen is she does?
Plot Summary
Wh3n by Victoria Laurie is one of the most mystifying books that I have read. The story takes place 20th century with a family of three. Mother, father, and daughter. The main character Maddie is barely a young little girl with an unusually strange gift. She is able to see numbers above people's head also known as, “death dates” Four years later, her father is murdered on the job, by a group of gang members. Maddie not knowing what will happen, but when, feels guilty for all that has happen. Feeling useless and helpless Maddie can’t seem to understand why she can see these strange numbers or why she can’t seem to alter the fixed numbers even when she tries to tell them before anything bad happens.
Ending
In conclusion the book is one of my new favorites. This books really does keep your mind racing of all the possibilities that could happen next. Not only that but the very ending of the book has you very confused. Leaving questions unanswered and still wondering of why these death dates originated in the first place and how do people posses this “gift”. Although, by the end of the book Maddie is finally at ease with herself and has finally fulfilled her promise she mad many years ago.

A real page-turner

User Review

Setting
It was so believable! Everything about it. The bullies in high school, the biased teachers and administration, all of it could have actually happened. The fact that it took place in a basic teens life made it so applicable to me even though I couldn't ever see peoples' death dates.
Characters
Maddie is the main character. She can see peoples' death dates before they happen and after.
"Stubby" aka Arnold is her best friend and is loyal to a fault. He loves Maddie like a sister and would do anything for her.
Donny is Maddie's uncle and attorney. He disapproves of Maddie's mom's issues but helps them where he can.
Cheryl is Maddie's mom and also an alcoholic. She is harshly addicted and has lost hope with her life.
Agent Faraday is the lead FBI agent on the case and is "converted" to Maddie's side.
Aiden is the boy that Maddie has a crush on. He obviously is interested in her too.
Mrs. Duncan is Maddie's neighbor and helps her through hard times until she eventually dies.
All these characters are so complex and have such diverse and realistic back stories that the story comes to life without much of a struggle. It's hard not to like this book.
Good Points
This was not a perfect happy ending where everyone gets everything they want. It is realistic. Life is hard and it's not always fair. It taught a theme of persistence and loyalty. It showed what someone can overcome.
Bad Points
I didn't see very many bad points. It was creative and realistic and that's almost a perfect combination.
Plot Summary
Maddie is a normal teenage girl...except that pasted on the forehead of everyone she sees is the date they will die. Can she warn them or is it better to just not get involved? When a boy who's death she told to his mother ends up being murdered, Maddie becomes the main lead to a murder. The investigation will test everyone she loves.
Ending
It ends just the way you might think...well almost. The ability to relate to a story is the essence of why authors right, to entertain and touch emotionally. The ending proves this through its realistic creativity and plot diligence.

Setting
The main character Maddie Fynn lives in a small suburban town just outside the big city of Brooklyn. Maddie says in the book that the town is peaceful and movements against the law are unprecedentedly low.
Characters
Maddie is the main character of When, she has the ability to read people's death dates, this ability makes her a suspect in several murders throughout the book.
Good Points
The end was totally fabulous! I also liked that their was no romantic relationships that blocked the actual story line.
Bad Points
I was so sad that Stubby was affected so majorly by jail and it was hard to see him force Maddie out of his life.
Plot Summary
Maddie can see death dates, which eventually makes her a suspect in some murders in her small town. She spends most of her time with the FBI trying to convince them that she is innocent. There is a major plot twist at the end and Maddie ends up being proven innocent.
Ending
The ending was very unexpected for me.

It bothered me the names of the characters a bit.
