Overview

What if destiny leads you to your soul mate, but the laws of time conspire to keep you apart?

If her parents had never divorced, Laura wouldn’t have to live in the shadow of Bruce, her mom’s unpredictable boyfriend. Her mom wouldn’t say things like "Be groovy," and Laura wouldn’t panic every weekend on the way to Dad’s Manhattan apartment. But when Laura spots a boy on a facing platform, lifting a camera to his face, looking right at her, Laura feels anything but afraid, and she can’t forget him. Jonas, meanwhile, thinks nonstop about the pretty hippie girl he glimpsed on the platform — trying to comprehend how she vanished, but mostly wondering whether he will see her again in a city of millions — and whether if he searches, he would have any chance of finding her. In a lyrical meditation on love, Nora Raleigh Baskin explores the soul’s ability to connect, and heal, outside the bounds of time and reason.

Setting
Jonas lives in New York City in an apartment with his mom and sister. Laura lives in Woodstock, NY with her mom and step-dad. It takes place in the 1970’s when talking about Laura and present day when talking about Jonas. Laura has to visit her dad in the city and has to ride the subway. The subway allows her and Jonas to be on the same subway, this causes problems because they can’t see eachother out of the subway. Most of the book takes place in the subway when they are with each other.
Characters
Laura’s step-dad lives with her mom and her in Woodstock. His name is Bruce and he isn’t a good person. Laura and him have a bad relationship. In this book, Bruce is abusive to Laura and only Laura. Her mom witnesses it but doesn’t do anything about it. Laura doesn’t want to tell anybody about it though, she doesn’t want to tell her dad because she doesn’t want to make him upset. She eventually tells Jonas and he insists that she tell her dad. She tells her dad and he makes her move in with him, to the city.
Bad Points
The overall story is good and she has a creative way of thinking. She explains things well, but she overlaps a lot. She will write a dialogue down but it doesn’t really have anything to do with what’s happening in the book then. She then tells a story and brings back the same dialogue she wrote down before. I don’t think it’s a very good style of writing. I think she needs to write down a small part of the dialogue and then when she comes back to it write out the whole dialogue and give more detail.
Plot Summary
Subway Love by Nora Raleigh Baskin is a love story involving two teenagers in New York. Laura and Jonas are the two main characters and they meet while riding the subway. Laura is living in the 1970’s and Jonas is living in the present. They are living in very different times but they can see each other when they are in the subway. They fall in love and accept the fact that they will only ever be able to be together in the subway.
Ending
The ending wasn’t very satisfying in my opinion. It was unexpected and didn’t go well with what the story was. It was really over dramatic and unpleasing. It was a good story and I think Baskin was just trying to write a cute love story, which it was. I think she was trying to say that when you find someone that you have a special connection with you should do whatever you can to stay with them.
